Glen Grant 1952 59 Year Old (Bottled 2012)

£2,599.99
/ Avg UK Price: £3445

Spirit distilled at Glen Grant in 1952, left undisturbed in a sherry cask until Gordon & MacPhail drew it in 2012. Fifty-nine years. Almost nobody keeps whisky this long, and almost nobody has the ancient Glen Grant stock to try. Gordon & MacPhail, the Elgin family firm that has bought and matured Glen Grant casks since the 19th century, is one of the very few who can.

Glen Grant is a Speyside distillery in Rothes, not a Highland one, and its house style has always been light, clean and elegant. That matters here: a lighter spirit is what survives six decades in oak without collapsing into pure tannin. Slow refill-sherry maturation has taken it down to a gentle 40% ABV, the strength these ultra-aged Gordon & MacPhail bottlings are known for, and stripped away any youthful edge.

Expect a whisky that trades power for grace. The nose from bottles of this era leans into old-library notes, waxed wood and sandalwood, dried apricot and orange peel, with the faint mushroomy rancio that only comes with real age. The palate is soft and layered, gentle oak and dark honey rather than aggressive spice, closing on a quiet, lingering finish. This is a bottle to consider as much for its provenance and scarcity as for the pour itself; treat it with the care any six-decade-old spirit deserves.

How to Serve

Neat, no water, in a tulip glass or Glencairn. At 40% and 59 years old there is nothing to open up and everything to lose; give it time in the glass instead.

Where to Drink It

The Connaught Bar, if you want a serious room for a serious bottle. Dukes Bar in St James's, quiet and old-school, suited to something this rare. Artesian at The Langham for an occasion worth marking.

Food Pairings

Nothing that competes. Perhaps a few plain walnuts or a sliver of aged hard cheese, but honestly this is a whisky to drink alone and slowly.
