Moet & Chandon: The World's Most Famous Champagne

The house that turned Champagne from a court curiosity into the drink the whole world reaches for when something good happens.

No brand has done more to make Champagne mean celebration than Moet & Chandon. Behind the fame sits a genuinely serious wine operation, and a cellar you could get lost in.

Founded by Claude Moet in Epernay in 1743, Moet grew into the largest Champagne house in the world by understanding something its rivals were slower to grasp: that Champagne is as much an idea as a wine. Its Imperial cuvee took its name from Napoleon, a personal friend of Jean-Remy Moet, and the house has been pouring at the world's good moments ever since.

Twenty-Eight Kilometres of Cellars

Beneath the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay run some of the longest cellars in the region, chalk tunnels stretching for miles at a constant, patient cool. That scale is the house's superpower. It lets Moet hold enormous reserves of older wine and marry across dozens of villages, building the consistent, generous style that made the name.

Fame is the easy part. Making the same reassuring wine, year after year, at this scale, is the quiet miracle.

Grand Vintage: The Serious Side

Look past the ubiquitous non-vintage and you find the house's real statement. Moet declares a Grand Vintage only in years that earn it, fewer than eighty times in its entire history, each one a separate decision to bottle a single harvest rather than blend it away. These are wines with a point of view, and they age beautifully.

The Collection: Time as an Ingredient

The Grand Vintage Collection takes that idea further. Moet holds bottles back from a declared year, leaving them on the lees far longer than the original release, then disgorges them decades later. The result is Champagne with the toast, nuts and honey that only long ageing brings, released when most houses would have sold out years before.

It is worth remembering that the same house makes the wine many treat as Champagne's summit, in its own right, and that the everyday and the exceptional here share one address and one philosophy. For the bigger picture, our Champagne region guide is the place to start.

Moet's genius was never only marketing. It was realising, earlier than anyone, that a great Champagne house has to be brilliant at both the bottle in the ice bucket and the one you lay down for twenty years. Very few manage both. Moet built an empire on it.
