Moët only declares a Grand Vintage when the year earns it. There have been fewer than 80 across the house's history, each one a separate decision rather than an annual habit. The 2004 arrives here in Jeroboam, three litres in a single bottle, which is theatre before you've even reached for the foil.
Épernay is Moët's home, and the 2004 draws across all three Champagne grapes: 38% Chardonnay for lift and citrus, 33% Pinot Noir for structure, 29% Pinot Meunier for roundness. Chef de Cave Benoît Gouez kept the dosage low at 5g/L, so the wine reads crisp and precise rather than plush.
The large format is the point. Wine ages more slowly in a Jeroboam, with less oxygen reaching it per volume against the cork, so this bottle has held its freshness where a standard 75cl would have moved further on. Expect white peach, lemon and pineapple up front, then marzipan, hazelnut and a digestive-biscuit warmth from the years on lees, all carried on a fine, insistent bead. Toast and almond sit underneath, and the finish stays tight and mineral.
A Jeroboam pours for a dozen or more without breaking the mood to open another. Bring it out when the room is full and the moment deserves scale.
How to Serve
Serve at 8–10°C. A large format warms slowly, so keep it on ice between pours. White-wine glasses, not flutes, for a wine with this much to say.
Where to Drink It
The Wolseley, Bentley's, or The River Cafe.
Food Pairings
A whole roast chicken for the table; the toast and almond notes love roasted skin.
