Glenfarclas 35 Year Old 'Warehouse Edition'
Thirty-five years in sherry wood, from one of the last great family distilleries still standing. Glenfarclas has been in Grant family hands on Speyside since 1865, still firing its stills directly and still committing almost everything to Oloroso sherry casks. This Warehouse Edition is that stubborn philosophy stretched out over three and a half decades.
Bottled at a comfortable 43%, it's old sherried Speyside at its most generous. The nose opens on roasted almonds, dried dark fruit and creamy toffee — the kind of depth only long-sleeping casks give you. The palate is rich and rolling: sherried raisin, dark chocolate, a little orange peel, all of it polished rather than heavy. The finish carries warm cinnamon and cocoa, and it stays a good while.
Pour it neat and give it room. A drop of water lifts the dried-fruit notes if you like, though it genuinely doesn't need any. This is a slow Sunday-evening dram for someone who already loves classic sherry-cask whisky — and at £850 for a 35-year-old from a distillery that has never cut a corner, it's a fair price for a serious bottle.
How to Serve
Neat in a tulip or Glencairn glass, at room temperature. Add a single drop of water only if you want to coax out more of the dried fruit. No ice.
Where to Drink It
This belongs in a proper old-school room — the bar at Dukes in St James's, where the hush suits a 35-year-old. Or Scarfes Bar at the Rosewood, if you'd rather sip it by the fire. For the full whisky-nerd treatment, Black Rock in Shoreditch will pour it the way it deserves.
Food Pairings
Honestly, it's better than most puddings — but if you want something alongside, a wedge of aged Cheddar or a plate of roast game gives the sherried richness something to push against. A square of very dark chocolate is the one sweet note I'd allow.
