2019, Gusbourne Blanc de Blancs
Precise, refined, and distinctly English. Gusbourne's Blanc de Blancs from the Kent vineyards represents something genuinely important in the modern wine world - the proof that English chalk and English skill can create sparkling wine that stands comfortably alongside the best of Champagne itself.
This is 100% Chardonnay in the traditional method, fermented and aged with meticulous attention to terroir expression. The result is a wine of composure and clarity, with citrus notes that speak of English acidity and brightness, chalk minerality that runs through from first nose to final finish, and the fine bubble structure only proper lees aging can build.
In the glass, it shimmers pale gold, the mousse fine and steady, rising with measured intent. The aromatics are clean and precise: lemon peel, white flowers, a hint of chalk dust after rain, toasted almond from the lees work, brioche warmth developing with air and warmth. On the palate, it's all about structure and refinement - a wine that doesn't shout but commands complete attention through quality and clarity. The acidity is bright without being aggressive, the minerality distinctive without being cold. This is champagne-method fizz made with genuine understanding of what makes it matter.
How to Serve
Chill to 8 - 10°C. A tulip glass or white wine glass allows the aromatics to develop properly without the narrowness of a traditional flute.
Food Pairings
Oysters are the natural match - the salinity and minerality align perfectly. But equally brilliant with sushi, ceviche, grilled white fish, scallops, or even roasted chicken. The brightness makes it perfect as an aperitif or paired thoughtfully with seafood throughout a meal.
