Structured and quietly powerful - that's Gusbourne's statement with their Blanc de Noirs. From the Kent vineyards using Pinot Noir exclusively, this is champagne-method fizz that proves English red varieties can express real depth and complexity when given proper intention and time.
Blanc de Noirs sits in interesting territory: it has the weight and structure of red varieties but the finesse and freshness bubbles demand. Gusbourne navigates this with confidence, creating a wine that feels simultaneously elegant and substantial. The Pinot Noir brings red fruit notes - strawberry, raspberry, red currant - without heaviness, supported by spice notes and the structural complexity only this variety provides.
In the glass, the colour is a pale golden hue with copper undertones, the mousse fine and precisely rising. The aromatics combine red and stone fruits with toasted brioche, subtle almond, hints of white flowers, and beneath it all, the chalk speaking clearly. On the palate, there's immediate depth and definition. Red fruit flavours meet minerality, spice meets acidity, and everything finds balance through the quality of the bubbles and the precision of the winemaking. The finish is dry, mineral-led, with a pleasant lingering touch of red fruit and saline minerality.
This is a champagne for both now and for cellaring - it will develop beautifully for 6 - 10 years with proper storage.
How to Serve
Chill to 8 - 10°C. A white wine glass or tulip shape serves it better than a flute, allowing the aromatics and structure to express themselves fully.
Where to Drink It
Bentley's, at the oyster bar, which is where a Blanc de Noirs of this weight belongs. The Wolseley for a glass before you have decided what to order. Dandy on Maltby Street if you would rather drink good English fizz without the ceremony.
Food Pairings
Red fruits suggest natural pairing with poultry, lighter game, or white meats with rich sauces. Also excellent with roasted chicken, smoked salmon, shellfish, or aged cheeses. The depth makes it an interesting aperitif with substance and character.
