Laforêt is Joseph Drouhin's regional Bourgogne, and it is one of the most honest introductions to red Burgundy you can buy — real Pinot Noir, real Burgundy, at a price that does not ask you to remortgage.

Drouhin have been a Beaune institution since 1880, farming organically and biodynamically across the Côte and buying from trusted growers for their regional cuvées. Laforêt draws Pinot Noir from vineyards across Burgundy, and the house style comes through clearly: elegance and freshness over power. This is the everyday face of a great domaine, and it is made with care rather than shortcuts.

Bright ruby in the glass, the nose is a bowl of red fruit — raspberry, redcurrant and wild strawberry — with a subtle floral edge and the faint earthiness that marks out good Pinot. The palate is fruity, refreshing and pleasant, with light tannins and gentle acidity carrying a clean, medium finish. It is not a profound wine, and it does not pretend to be — but it is charming, well-balanced and unmistakably Burgundian.

At £25.99 it is fair value for a Drouhin Bourgogne and a lovely bottle for a simple weeknight or a first taste of Pinot. Drink it over the next two to three years while it is fresh and lively.

Serve lightly chilled, 13–15°C, in a Burgundy bowl. No decanting — enjoy the fruit as it is.
