Grenache Blanc, Ridge 2024 75cl
Ridge is best known for its legendary Zinfandel-based reds, but this Grenache Blanc shows the estate's quieter, Rhône-inspired side. The 2024 is a textured, characterful white — 85% Grenache Blanc rounded out with Picpoul and a touch of Roussanne.
Ridge Vineyards have been a benchmark California producer since the 1960s, famed for a hands-off, terroir-first philosophy and for using native yeasts and integrated cellar work rather than heavy intervention. Their white Rhône blends are made with the same care as the reds, drawing on old-vine Mediterranean varieties suited to California's warmth. Fermentation and ageing typically involve some time in older oak, building texture without overt vanilla.
The wine pours a bright gold and opens with white peach, quince, fennel and a waxy, honeyed note, with Picpoul lending a citrus lift and Roussanne adding a nutty richness. The palate is dry and medium to full-bodied, with a supple, almost oily texture balanced by fresh acidity and a saline, herb-tinged finish. It has real presence for a white.
Drink it now with a year or two of flexibility; a little bottle age will only add complexity. At around £45 it is a distinctive, food-loving white for those who want something with weight and personality beyond the usual Chardonnay.
How to Serve
Serve at 10-12°C in a larger white wine glass to let the aromatics open. Not too cold — over-chilling mutes the texture.
Where to Drink It
Noble Rot in Soho for an adventurous white by the glass. Quo Vadis in Soho for considered cooking. Brawn in Bethnal Green for its natural-leaning list.
Food Pairings
Try it with roast chicken and herbs, or a bowl of bouillabaisse where its texture and salinity come into their own.
