Beluga Noble Vodka 70cl

Beluga Noble is the bottle that made the brand's name, and it earns its place by ignoring the old idea that vodka should taste of nothing at all. This is a Russian malt-spirit vodka from the Mariinsk distillery in Siberia, built for texture — smooth, faintly sweet, with just enough grip to keep you interested.

The distillery sits far out in the taiga, drawing on deep artesian water and distilling from malt. After distillation the spirit is filtered slowly through a tall birch-charcoal column, then rested for thirty days with small natural additions of honey and oat extract, plus a little milk thistle, which round the edges without pushing it sweet. That patience is the whole point of the Noble style.

The nose is clean and gentle: soft lemon zest and a herbal lift, with a suggestion of grain and vanilla underneath. The palate follows with a silky, almost creamy body, a quiet barley sweetness and a thread of white pepper that lends the finish a little warmth. Nothing is loud. You notice this vodka for its smoothness rather than for any single flavour, and it stays clean long after the glass is empty.

Frozen and neat is how it shines, though it makes a composed, understated Martini for anyone who finds gin too aromatic.

How to Serve

From the freezer, neat, in a chilled shot glass or small tumbler. For a Martini, stir with ice, keep the vermouth restrained and finish with a lemon twist.
