The name does a lot of work here, so let us be straight about it: Beluga Gold Line takes its name from the way it is dressed, not from anything floating in the glass. The liquid is clear. What you are paying for is a malt-based Siberian vodka given an unusually long rest, in a bottle built like an occasion.
Beluga is made at the Mariinsk distillery, deep in the Siberian taiga, on malt spirit and soft artesian water. Gold Line sits at the top of the range: filtered with more care than the standard bottling and left to settle for around ninety days so the spirit rounds out before it is sealed. Each bottle is corked, closed under wax and stamped with its own serial number, then packed with a small hammer and brush to break and clean the seal — a ritual that reads as charming or excessive depending on your mood.
On the nose it is clean and quietly grainy, with light citrus and a touch of vanilla cream. The palate is where the resting shows: full and soft, carrying gentle wheat sweetness and a thread of honey, with a flick of white pepper ahead of a long, polished finish. This is vodka that tastes of something, which is more than most of the category manages at any price.
Serve it cold and let it speak for itself. It has the weight to sit under caviar, and enough character that drowning it in mixer would be a waste.
How to Serve
Neat and properly cold, from the freezer, in a small chilled glass. If you must lengthen it, keep to soda and a lemon twist rather than anything sweet.
Where to Drink It
Artesian at The Langham — a bar that treats spirits seriously. American Bar at The Savoy — old-school glamour, faultless service. Scarfes Bar at Rosewood — velvet, low light, late nights.
Food Pairings
The classic call is caviar on ice with blini. Smoked sturgeon or oysters do the job just as well.
