Here is Pinot Grigio with a sense of place, grown organically on the Villa Bogdano estate in the Venetian lowlands rather than churned out for volume. The 2019 shows what the grape can do when yields are kept honest and the fruit is left to speak.
Villa Bogdano 1880 farms near Lison, on ancient riverbed soils in eastern Veneto, working biodynamically across the estate. That care shows in the wine: this is Pinot Grigio built around freshness and texture, not the watery neutrality the name too often implies.
Look for pale straw in the glass and aromas of ripe pear, white peach and a squeeze of lemon, with a subtle almond note on the palate. The acidity is clean and mouthwatering, the body light-to-medium, and there is a gentle mineral saltiness on the close that keeps you reaching for the glass. True to grape, and better made than most at the price.
At £19.99 this is a smart everyday white: your reliable Tuesday-night bottle that happens to have a conscience and a bit of character. Drink it young and fresh.
