Chambolle-Musigny is the village every red-Burgundy lover falls for - the most perfumed, lace-like Pinot Noir on the Cote de Nuits. Antonin Guyon's Clos du Village is a monopole, a walled plot the domaine owns outright right beside the village itself, which makes this bottle a rare thing: a single-owner window into Chambolle's floral heart.
The vines here average forty years, rooted in the pale limestone that gives Chambolle its finesse. Guyon ages the wine eighteen months in oak, a third of it new, enough to frame the fruit without ever smothering it. The house style leans on elegance over muscle, which suits a village that has never been about power.
The 2022 opens delicate and lifted: raspberry and redcurrant, rose and violet, a wisp of sweet spice and forest floor behind. The palate is where Chambolle earns its reputation - silky, elegant, quietly structured, with soft integrated tannins carrying real length. Red fruit meets a fine woody-spiced depth, nothing overworked, everything in proportion. It closes long and gentle. Approachable now, but the balance here suggests a decade of graceful ageing ahead.
How to Serve
Serve at 15-16°C in a broad Burgundy glass. A short decant of 20 minutes lifts the perfume; any longer and you risk blowing off its delicacy.
Where to Drink It
The Wolseley, Piccadilly - grand-cafe glamour that suits a fine Burgundy by the glass.
J Sheekey, Covent Garden - elegant fish cooking that a silky Chambolle flatters beautifully.
Bentley's, Piccadilly - oysters, turbot and a red with the tact to sit alongside them.
Food Pairings
Roast guinea fowl with a little butter and thyme lets the wine's perfume do the talking - keep the plate quiet and let Chambolle sing.
