Macallan 1984 18 Year Old (Inc' Box)
Distilled in 1984 and drawn from sherry oak, this is Macallan from an era its devotees speak of in almost reverent terms. It carries the old 18 Year Old presentation, from the years before the range was restyled, and arrives complete with its original box. For anyone tracing the arc of Speyside's most collected distillery, a bottle like this is a fixed point.
Macallan sits on the banks of the Spey at Craigellachie, deep in the heart of Speyside, and built its name on two things: a small, wide-necked still that keeps only the richest cut of spirit, and an obsession with sherry-seasoned oak. In the mid-1980s that meant casks that had held oloroso, and it is those casks, more than anything, that shaped the whisky in this bottle. Mature stock from this decade tends to be gamier and more savoury than the polished house style that came later, and collectors prize it for exactly that reason.
Expect a nose of treacle tart, stem ginger and dried fruit, lifted by orange peel and warm spice. The palate is soft but deeply concentrated: chocolate-coated ginger, dates and apricot over a firm oak spine, with the clove-and-marmalade character old sherried Macallan does so well. The finish is long and gently warming, ginger and dark fruit trailing away slowly. Bottled at 43%, it takes water reluctantly, if at all. A whisky of this age and provenance asks only to be poured with a steady hand.
How to Serve
Neat, at room temperature, in a tulip glass or Glencairn. Give it fifteen minutes in the glass before the first sip. Water is unnecessary here; let the sherry cask speak.
Where to Drink It
Dukes Bar in St James's, where a quiet corner suits a whisky of this weight. The Connaught Bar, if the occasion calls for polish. Milroy's of Soho, among people who will understand what you are holding.
Food Pairings
I would drink this alone, but if pressed, a small plate of Medjool dates and aged Manchego, or simply a square of very dark chocolate.
