Krug Grande Cuvee Brut NV

£170.00

Most champagne houses blend across two or three vintages. Krug blends across more than ten — drawing from a library of reserve wines that stretches back over twenty years. Every bottle of Grande Cuvée is, in effect, a greatest hits compilation assembled by people with impeccable taste and unreasonable patience.

This is the champagne that other champagne makers drink when they want to be reminded what the point of it all is.

The philosophy is singular: there is no non-vintage Krug, only multi-vintage Krug. The house rejects the idea that blending across years is somehow lesser than a single vintage. In fact, they argue — persuasively, once you taste it — that the opposite is true. Grande Cuvée is composed from around 120 wines from ten or more different harvests, some of them decades old, each contributing something the others can't. The result is a champagne of extraordinary depth and consistency, yet one that's subtly different with every Edition.

And yes — every bottle carries an Edition number, unique to that particular blend. Enter the six-digit Krug ID on their app and you'll find the exact composition: which years, which vineyards, which parcels. It's the most transparent labelling in champagne, and it's quietly revolutionary.

In the glass, Grande Cuvée is golden and full. The mousse is dense and fine — almost creamy. On the nose: toasted hazelnut, dried apricot, acacia honey, a breath of marzipan. The palate is where it gets serious — layers of brioche and candied citrus, a thread of nougat, then a finish that turns long, saline, and slightly smoky, like sea air through an open window. It doesn't end so much as gradually, reluctantly, fade.

How to Serve

Krug asks for a little more warmth than most champagnes — 10–12°C rather than fridge-cold. A wide-bowled glass is essential; a flute would be like listening to an orchestra through a keyhole. And ideally, serve it with food. This is champagne that was built for the table.

Food Pairings

Krug's own suggestion — and they're right — is that Grande Cuvée is magnificent with food you wouldn't normally associate with champagne. Fish and chips. Fried chicken. A slab of mature cheddar with quince paste. Mushroom risotto. The richness and salinity of the wine means it matches umami, fat, and salt in ways that lighter champagnes simply can't. A cheese board and a bottle of Grande Cuvée is one of the great pairings in wine — and significantly less effort than a three-course dinner.
