Hennessy XO Cognac

Hennessy X.O is the bottle that invented the category. Maurice Hennessy created it in 1870 for his own circle — "X.O" simply meant Extra Old — and every Extra Old cognac since has been chasing what he started. More than 150 years on, it's still the benchmark.

The blend runs to over 100 different eaux-de-vie, drawn from the four great crus — Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois — with some components aged up to thirty years in French Limousin oak. Hennessy's cellar master assembles it to a consistent house style: rich, dark and unmistakably powerful. It's bottled at 40%.

This is a big, brooding cognac. The nose opens with candied fruit and moves into cocoa and dried fruit — prune, raisin, a suggestion of leather. The palate is full-bodied and velvety, layering dark chocolate and dried fruit against a genuinely spicy, peppery heat that Hennessy describes as "rising flame." The finish goes on and on, warming rather than sharp.

It's a serious after-dinner cognac and an assured gift — the label alone says you didn't cut corners. Give it room and it repays the attention.

How to Serve

Neat at room temperature in a tulip glass, never over-chilled. Let it sit a moment to breathe. This is a slow, contemplative pour — not one for mixing.

The Connaught Bar for the full ceremony. Dukes Bar in St James's for quiet grandeur. Artesian at The Langham if you want it in expert company.

Food Pairings

Made for dark chocolate — a 70% truffle is the classic match. It also holds its own against a strong blue cheese or a good cigar.
