Domaine Didier Dagueneau, Les Jardins de Babylone, Jurancon 2018 - 75cl
Domaine Didier Dagueneau's Les Jardins de Babylone Jurançon 2018 represents one of the most compelling sweet wine expressions from the Pyrenean foothills - a wine of remarkable complexity, balance, and character. This is not a wine that relies on simple sweetness; instead, it achieves its complexity through careful viticulture, meticulous harvesting, and winemaking that respects both the grapes and the tradition of Jurançon.
Located in southwestern France near the Pyrenees, Jurançon benefits from a unique climate where late-ripening Petit and Gros Manseng grapes achieve extraordinary concentration whilst maintaining bright acidity. Dagueneau, one of the region's most respected producers, works exclusively with organic viticulture and natural winemaking principles. Les Jardins de Babylone represents a selection of the finest grapes, often affected by noble rot, creating a wine of both richness and refinement.
In the glass, the wine presents a golden amber hue that catches the light beautifully - evidence of both ripeness and aging potential. The nose is extraordinarily complex, revealing layers of dried apricot, honey, candied citrus peel, hazelnut, and subtle spice. There's also a mineral undertone and hints of exotic fruit - mango, pineapple - that speak of the Manseng grape varieties. On the palate, the wine is luxuriously sweet yet never cloying, with remarkable acidity that provides structure and freshness. Flavours of honey, dried stone fruits, nuts, and subtle spice unfold slowly, developing in the mouth and lingering long after swallowing. The texture is rich and velvety, the finish long and elegant.
How to Serve
Serve slightly chilled (around 12-14°C) in a small white wine glass. The wine's complexity deserves proper vessels and serving temperature.
Food Pairings
Exceptional with blue cheeses, aged Comté, foie gras, and roasted nuts. Also brilliant with spiced desserts, apple tart, and dark chocolate preparations.
