Béreche et Fils represent the very best of grower champagne - family producers who've maintained independence whilst achieving world-class quality. Based in the Montagne de Reims, specifically the Premier Cru village of Ludes, this house combines traditional methods with meticulous vineyard management. The 2015 vintage proved exceptional for the region, offering ripe fruit balanced against crisp acidity. Le Cran refers to a specific vineyard site of considerable reputation, where chalk subsoil and careful exposure create ideal conditions for Pinot Noir. This wine carries Béreche's signature: power restrained by elegance. In the glass, it displays a golden hue with persistent, fine bubbles. The nose initially offers toasted bread aromas - the result of extended ageing on lees - before revealing deeper complexities. Red fruit emerges: cherry, strawberry, with a mineral undertone that suggests chalk influence. As the wine opens, secondary notes develop: hazelnut, brioche, with hints of marmalade that add complexity without heaviness. The palate confirms the wine's quality. The attack is vigorous yet refined, with carbonation adding texture rather than aggressiveness. Flavours build: red fruit, brioche, almond nougat - each layer revealing itself gradually. The mid-palate shows remarkable concentration, the fruit supported by precise acidity that provides framework without sharpness. The finish extends pleasantly, with mineral notes lingering. This is serious champagne with food-friendly structure. How to Serve: Serve at 8-9 degrees Celsius in proper flutes to showcase the bubble stream and concentrate aromatics. Allow time for the wine to warm slightly - opening reveals more complexity. Food Pairings: Excellent with sophisticated appetisers, aged cheeses, and shellfish preparations. The wine's Pinot Noir backbone suits roasted poultry and lighter game dishes. Try with Dover sole, lobster thermidor, or Norfolk turkey. White burgundy matches - aged gruyère, comté - work beautifully.
