Valbuena 5º Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia 2019 75cl

Valbuena 5º Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia 2019 75cl
Valbuena 5º is the wine Vega Sicilia releases in its fifth year, and the 2019 is a benchmark expression from one of Spain's warmest, most heralded recent vintages. Almost entirely Tinto Fino (the estate's own strain of Tempranillo) with a whisper of Merlot, it carries the DNA of Único at a fraction of the outlay.
The estate sits on the eastern edge of Ribera del Duero, at Valbuena de Duero, farming the same historic vineyards that made its reputation in the 19th century. Fruit is fermented in a mix of oak and steel, then raised across French and American oak for roughly three years before bottling. The house never rushes.
Expect a deep, brooding red: black cherry and damson layered with cedar, sweet tobacco, cocoa and a savoury note of dried herbs. Ribera's continental swings give it real freshness beneath the ripeness, so the tannins are firm yet polished and the finish runs long on graphite and spice.
At £169.99 this sits in collector territory, and it earns it. Drinking beautifully now with an hour in a decanter, it will also reward a decade or more in the cellar for those with the patience.
How to Serve
Serve at 16-18°C in a large Bordeaux glass. Decant for at least an hour, ideally two, to let the fruit unfurl.
Where to Drink It
Barrafina for the finest Spanish cooking to match its pedigree. Sabor for slow-cooked Castilian meats off the wood grill. Lurra in Marylebone for aged txuleta steak.
Food Pairings
Made for roast lamb or a properly aged ribeye. Manchego and jamón ibérico make a simpler but no less rewarding match.
