Petrolo Boggina Bianco 2022 - 75cl

Petrolo Boggina Bianco 2022 - 75cl
Trebbiano has a bad name — it's the grape behind oceans of thin, forgettable Italian white. Petrolo set out to prove that when you take it seriously, it can make something genuinely thrilling. Boggina B (short for Bianco) comes from the Valdarno di Sopra in eastern Tuscany, an estate better known for its cult Merlot, Galatrona. This is 100% Trebbiano, farmed with care and made like a fine white Burgundy.
The winemaking is the key: natural fermentation, then over 15 months resting on its lees in French oak tonneaux. That long élevage builds the texture and depth you'd never expect from the grape. It pours a deepening gold.
The nose is rich and layered — stone fruit and honey, acacia flower, tangerine peel, roasted almond, with an intriguing thread of saffron spice. On the palate it's creamy and full-bodied, all orange peel, gentle toast and a savoury, almost salted-butter richness, held together by a flinty minerality and just enough acidity to keep it lively. There's a little Burgundy in its bones and a lot of Tuscan sun. It drinks beautifully now and will reward a few years in the cellar.
How to Serve
Serve at 11–13°C, not fridge-cold, in a large white Burgundy glass so the texture and spice can show. A young bottle opens nicely with twenty minutes of air or a brief decant.
Where to Drink It
Bocca di Lupo in Soho, for regional Italian cooking and a clever list. The River Cafe, natural home of a serious Italian white. Noble Rot, for its love of texture-driven bottles.
Food Pairings
Roast chicken with lemon and herbs is the obvious win. It also handles richer plates — a truffle pasta, or a piece of turbot in butter — with real confidence.
