Macallan 1964 Special Selection
This is a genuine piece of whisky history. The Macallan 1964 Special Selection comes from the distillery's legendary vintage era — Speyside spirit laid down in 1964, matured in sherry oak for 17 to 18 years, and bottled in the early 1980s for a German importer. It's Macallan from the exact period that built the distillery's reputation: old-style, sherry-wood, made when sherry casks were the entire point.
At 43% it trades on depth and poise rather than power. Expect a nose of blood orange and orange-and-ginger marmalade, dark honey and dried fruit, with that unmistakable old-sherry layer of leather and polished mahogany underneath. The palate is rich and resinous: raisin, date, stewed cherry, warm ginger, a thread of orange oil — the kind of complexity that only comes from decades in good wood.
A bottle like this is as much for the cabinet as the glass. If you do open it, treat it with care — neat, in a tulip, no water, no rush. How to Serve
Neat in a tulip glass, at room temperature. No water, no ice — at this age and strength, anything you add only gets in the way.
Where to Drink It
A bottle for an occasion, not a bar. If you wanted the setting to match, the Connaught Bar or the American Bar at The Savoy have the gravity for it — but in truth this is one to open at home, with the one person who'll appreciate what they're tasting.
Food Pairings
Don't bury it under food. At most, a plate of aged Manchego and toasted walnuts, with a single square of dark chocolate to one side if the old-sherry richness calls for it.
