Grande Couronne means great crown, and this 26 year old Glenfiddich earns the name through an unusual final act: two full years finishing in rare French Cognac casks. Matured first in a mix of American and European oak and bottled at 43.8%, it is a Speyside malt that has spent a little time speaking French.

Glenfiddich, in Dufftown at the heart of Speyside, is the world's most awarded single malt and still family-owned by William Grant & Sons. The house style leans on orchard fruit and gentle oak, but the Cognac finish here pulls the whisky somewhere richer and more patisserie-like. Think of it as the familiar Glenfiddich profile dressed for a Parisian dinner.

The nose is lively and toasty, all baked Tarte Tatin, buttery choux pastry and warm oak sweetness. The palate opens sweet, with brown sugar and icing sugar, before a citrus tartness and a touch of pepper come through, then grape must, maple syrup and the soft grip of the Cognac wood. The finish is generous and long, layered with toasted oak, café crème, brown sugar and a whisper of spice. It is elegant rather than heavy, and rewards slow sipping.

A fine choice to mark something worth marking, poured after a good meal.

How to Serve

Neat, in a tulip glass, to let the Cognac-cask sweetness and pastry notes come forward. Water isn't needed at this strength, though a single drop won't hurt.

Where to Drink It

The Connaught Bar, whose polish suits this whisky's refinement. Artesian at The Langham, for a stylish after-dinner setting. Scarfes Bar at the Rosewood, all velvet and low light.

Food Pairings

Lean into the French theme with a slice of proper Tarte Tatin, or a crème brûlée with its bitter caramel top.
