Domaine Guiberteau, Saumur, Les Moulins Rouge 2022 - 75cl
Les Moulins is Romain Guiberteau's most approachable red, the cuvée he first made from vines converting to organic farming and now bottles as a joyful, early-drinking Saumur. It's Cabernet Franc drawn from parcels around Berrie, Brézé and Montreuil-Bellay, all on Saumur's tuffeau limestone — the same terroir that makes his top wines, in a lighter, friendlier register.
Where his single-vineyard reds ask for patience, this one just wants pouring. The 2022 is bright and juicy: crunchy raspberry and red cherry, a lick of blackcurrant, a graphite-and-violet lift that's pure Loire Cabernet Franc. Fermented with wild yeasts and raised mostly in tank rather than new oak, it keeps the fruit clean and the wine fresh. The tannins are supple, the acidity crisp, and it finishes clean and moreish.
Serve it slightly cool and it's one of the great value house reds — no fuss, no waiting, just excellent Cabernet Franc for the table. Buy it by the case and don't feel guilty opening one on a school night.
How to Serve
Serve lightly chilled, 14–15°C — a cool Loire red is a beautiful thing. A standard red-wine glass is fine. No decant needed.
Where to Drink It
Dandy for relaxed, wine-led plates. Noble Rot for the Loire faithful. The Wolseley for an unpretentious supper.
Food Pairings
A charcuterie board or a rare burger. It's also lovely, lightly chilled, with grilled sardines.
