Bunnahabhain 40 Year Old (Bottled 2023)
Highland tradition, in the Scottish Highlands. This expression encapsulates everything that renders Highland whisky internationally revered. The distillery's signature robust character emerges from generations of know-how, passed hand to hand, legacy to legacy. Here you hold the custodian's work.
The first encounter whispers what decades of maturation have wrought. Heather honey rises first - or does it? The nose rewards patience, and rewards it generously. What reads initially as heather honey becomes spice. There is a seductive quality here, an ease that belies the complexity beneath. fruit notes emerge on the second breath, lingering like a half-remembered conversation. The whole is greater than the sum.
On the palate, this whisky refuses to shout. It murmurs, and you lean in. The opening unfolds as aged with meticulous care, the casks contributing layers of sophistication to every mouthful. The mid-palate develops with surprising depth - layers that reveal themselves frame by frame, like a film unspooling. The finish is neither rushed nor outstayed its welcome; it departs with a gentle persistence, leaving traces of what came before.
A whisky of singular character, one that rewards both the novice inquirer and the devoted enthusiast. Pour a measure, add a splash of water if you choose - many prefer it neat - and settle in. This is a dram for contemplation, for gathering, for moments that matter.
How to Serve
Neat in a tulip glass allows the full aromatic spectrum to flourish. A splash of cool water opens the spirit further, should you prefer. At House of Decant, we suggest simply: slowly, and without hurry.
