Bruichladdich on Loch Indaal built its reputation on the idea that Islay doesn't have to mean smoke. This 18 Year Old spends its whole life maturing on the island, primarily in ex-bourbon casks with a small proportion of sweet wine wood — a touch of Sauternes and Port that adds a fruity edge. It's bottled unchill-filtered at 50%, so there's plenty of structure to carry the age.

The nose is elegant and creamy: honey, butterscotch and orange citrus, soft brie-like dairy, toasted grain and coconut shavings, with a herbal lift of chives and lemongrass. The palate is layered with tropical fruit — peach, pineapple, plum, lime and guava — over mellow toasted oak, hay and butterscotch, with cinnamon and malt building the longer you sit with it. The finish is medium and gently drying, apples and honey turning sweeter into the aftertaste, with a chalky, grassy malt note.

At £149.99 this is special-occasion Islay for someone who already knows they love the unpeated style — refined, coastal and complex. Not a beginner's bottle, but a deeply satisfying one for those who get it.

How to Serve

Neat in a tulip glass, room temperature. At 50% and eighteen years it rewards patience and a careful drop of water, which coaxes out the tropical fruit — add it slowly.
