Bladnoch Samsara Single Malt Whisky 70cl

Samsara is where Bladnoch loosens its collar. Bourbon barrels for the backbone, red wine casks for the colour and the fruit — no age statement, just a blend built for pleasure.

The distillery has been making whisky beside the River Bladnoch, near Wigtown in Galloway, since 1817. It is Lowland through and through: the spirit runs light and clean, which is precisely why the red wine casks land the way they do. There is room for them to speak. Where a heavier Highland or island malt might swallow that influence, here it sits right on the surface.

The nose opens with vanilla fudge and baked apple, then cinnamon and gingerbread, with orchard fruit — peach, plum, a little nectarine — and a lift of orange blossom over the top. The palate is rich and mouthcoating: juicy raisin, golden syrup, baked apple, a thread of dark chocolate and caramel, and the soft tannic grip those wine casks leave behind. It finishes sweet and warm before the oak gently dries everything out.

An easy whisky to love. It is also the pour to hand someone who insists they don't like whisky — more often than not, this one changes their mind.

How to Serve

Neat to start, at 46.7%. A drop of water pushes the fruit further forward if you want it sweeter. No need to overthink this one.

Where to Drink It

Scarfes Bar at the Rosewood, for velvet sofas and a fruit-forward dram. Boisdale of Belgravia, where Scotland and a bit of theatre go hand in hand. Or Black Rock in Shoreditch for something more low-key.

Food Pairings

Pour it after dinner with a wedge of Comté — the nuttiness catches the wine-cask fruit nicely. Cured ham works too if you're grazing.
