Togouchi Premium Japanese Whisky 70cl
Togouchi Premium represents a distinctly Japanese approach to whisky refinement - delicate, balanced, and fundamentally respectful of both tradition and the raw materials from which it's crafted. This is 100% Japanese whisky in the truest sense: malted and unmalted barley grown in Japan, fully distilled, aged, blended, and bottled at Sakurao Distillery, near the Seto Inland Sea - one of the few Japanese distilleries capable of producing both malt and grain whisky under a single roof.
What makes Togouchi genuinely unique is its ageing location. Whilst most distilleries age their whiskies in warehouses, Togouchi has chosen an old railway tunnel 70 kilometres from the distillery - a location where high humidity and cool, consistent temperatures create conditions that fundamentally alter the maturation process. The tunnel's environment limits the aggressive influence of wood, resulting in a whisky that's remarkably light in colour and flavour compared to its Scottish or American counterparts, yet possesses genuine depth and sophistication.
The nose announces Togouchi's character immediately: fruity and woody notes dance together in near-perfect balance. Vanilla emerges prominently, alongside hints of walnut and marzipan - that almond-sugar combination that suggests careful cask selection and gentle maturation. There's a delicate floral quality here, an almost perfumed elegance that feels quintessentially Japanese.
On the palate, Premium delivers exactly what its name suggests: genuine refinement without pretension. The fruity character - orchard fruits, subtle stone fruits - provides foundation, whilst vanilla and walnut creaminess creates textural complexity. Marzipan sweetness lingers throughout, with subtle spice (cinnamon, nutmeg) appearing gradually. The finish is clean, warming, and pleasingly dry, with vanilla and nut notes lingering as fruitiness fades.
This is whisky for those who appreciate subtlety, for moments that demand elegance without ostentation. It's gift-appropriate not just because of the packaging, but because of the spirit's inherent sophistication.
**How to Serve:** Pour neat or with a single ice cube to appreciate its delicate character. A small splash of water will unlock additional fruity and floral complexity. Exceptional in a premium highball or simply sipped neat during quiet moments.
