The famous Barolo house of Bruno Giacosa also turns out one of Piedmont's loveliest whites, and this 2025 Roero Arneis is the freshest expression of it. A new-release vintage, it captures the grape at its most vivid and aromatic — the estate's red-wine precision applied to a bright, easy-drinking white.
Arneis is a native grape of the Roero hills, across the Tanaro river from Barolo, grown on sandy soils that give the wine its delicacy. Once nearly extinct, it was rescued by Piedmontese growers including Giacosa. This bottling is unoaked and stainless-steel fermented, a style built to preserve freshness and perfume.
As a young 2025, expect vibrant orchard fruit — pear, white peach, a touch of green apple — with floral notes of almond blossom and chamomile, and Arneis's signature nutty, slightly savoury undertone. The palate is dry and softly textured, with gentle acidity and a clean, bitter-almond finish. Crisp and fragrant.
At around £24 this is a versatile white that over-delivers as an aperitif or a partner for light Italian food. Drink it young and fresh — this vintage will be at its most expressive over the next year or two.
