QPA Reserva Branco
The Douro made its name on port and, more recently, big red wines — but its whites are quietly becoming some of Portugal's most exciting. Quinta da Pedra Alta is a relatively new project working with consultant winemaker Matt Gant, and this Reserva Branco is their serious white: barrel-fermented, textured and built to sit at the table with proper food.
It's a blend of indigenous Douro grapes from the highest, coolest vineyards on the estate — Viosinho and Fernão Pires give aromatic depth, Gouveio and Rabigato bring the citrus and freshness. Cleverly, only part of the blend sees oak: Viosinho in new French barrels, Fernão Pires in older wood, the rest kept in stainless steel to preserve its zip. The oak is there for texture, not flavour.
The nose is generous and layered — white peach, camomile, blossom and pear, with a wisp of smoky wood underneath. On the palate it's complex and well-structured: zesty lemon and green apple, a little vanilla pod and delicate nuttiness, all held by balanced acidity and a smooth, mineral texture. There's a real echo of fine white Bordeaux here, with the oak beautifully integrated. It drinks well now and will gain more depth over the next few years.
How to Serve
Serve at 11–13°C in a full white wine glass — not too cold, so the texture and oak spice can show. A young bottle rewards twenty minutes of air.
Where to Drink It
Bar Douro near London Bridge, natural home of a serious Douro white. Wiltons on Jermyn Street, for fine fish. Noble Rot, for its love of textured, mineral whites.
Food Pairings
Excellent with roast chicken or turbot in butter. It also stands up to richer plates like a creamy risotto or grilled pork.
