Pinot Grigio, Jermann 2025 75cl
Pinot Grigio has a reputation for being the wine you order when you can't be bothered to think. Jermann's version is the rebuttal. This is Pinot Grigio taken seriously by one of Friuli's founding families, and it drinks like a proper white wine.
The Jermann estate sits in the far north-east of Italy, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, where cool Alpine air meets the Adriatic and the growing season runs long and unhurried. Silvio Jermann built his name here making whites of unusual precision and texture. The fruit for this bottling comes from those breezy, well-drained hillside sites that give Friulian Pinot Grigio its edge.
In the glass it shows ripe pear and white peach, a twist of lemon zest and a subtle almond-blossom note that is pure northern Italy. The palate is dry and clean, with more weight and grip than most Pinot Grigio manages, and a saline, stony finish that keeps you coming back. There is real freshness here, but also a quiet substance underneath it.
At around £30 this is a step up from supermarket Grigio in every measurable way, and worth the difference. Drink it young, over the next couple of years, while that aromatic lift is at its brightest. It is the sort of white you open on a warm evening and finish without quite meaning to.
How to Serve
Serve well chilled at 8–10°C in a standard white wine glass. No need to decant.
