Patrón's reposado takes the same multi-cask thinking as its añejo and dials the oak right back. The spirit rests only a few months in a combination of American, French and Hungarian oak barrels — just long enough to pick up a whisper of wood while keeping the bright agave character front and centre.
It's made at Hacienda Patrón in the highlands of Jalisco, where the agave is crushed both by the volcanic-stone tahona wheel and a roller mill. That twin method gives Patrón its recognisable weight and mouthfeel, whichever expression you're drinking.
The colour is a light straw gold. The nose is fresh cooked agave with vanilla and a little caramel; the palate is smooth and lightly sweet, carrying soft oak, black pepper and a curl of smoke. The finish is clean, warm and gently spiced. This is the reposado that plays both ways — refined enough to sip neat, but with enough backbone to make a properly grown-up Margarita or Paloma without vanishing into the mix. Bottled at 40%.
Keep it for the drinker who wants a step up from blanco in their cocktails, or a light, sip-able reposado for early evening.
How to Serve
Neat in a copita to taste the oak, or in a Margarita where its spice holds up against the lime. A single cube suits it well on a warm night.
Where to Drink It
The American Bar at The Savoy for a classic serve. Swift in Soho for the agave list. Tayēr + Elementary for a modern twist.
Food Pairings
Pairs nicely with grilled chorizo, or fish tacos with a chipotle crema.
