Arneis is Piedmont's answer to those who think the region is all about red — a white grape once nearly extinct, now making some of Italy's most charming aromatic whites. Punset's organic Langhe Arneis 2024 is fresh, floral and quietly serious.
Punset in Neive farm organically across the board, and their Arneis comes from Langhe hillside vineyards where the grape keeps its delicate perfume and gentle texture. Arneis, whose name roughly means little rascal for its tricky nature in the vineyard, gives a wine that is fuller and rounder than a lean northern white but still fresh. Stainless-steel vinification keeps the aromatics clean and precise.
Pour it pale straw-gold and you get a fragrant nose of pear, white peach, almond blossom and a subtle note of chamomile and hay. The palate is dry and medium-bodied, with a soft, slightly waxy texture balanced by a fresh, gently mineral finish. Acidity is moderate rather than piercing, which gives the wine an easy, rounded drinkability.
Best enjoyed young over the next year or two while its perfume is at its brightest. At around £25 it is a rewarding step up from everyday whites — an organic, distinctive Piedmont bottle for anyone curious to look beyond the usual grapes.
