Glen Moray Classic - 70cl

If you want a gentle way into single malt, Glen Moray Classic is one of the easiest doors to open. It is matured entirely in American ex-bourbon casks, a good number of them first-fill, which is exactly why it tastes the way it does: soft, sweet and unfussy, with none of the heavy sherry or peat that can put newcomers off.

Glen Moray sits in Elgin, on the banks of the River Lossie, in the heart of Speyside. It is one of Scotland's more affordable distilleries and has never traded on hype, which is part of the charm. The Classic is a no-age-statement bottling drawn from whisky averaging around seven years, released at 40% ABV. This is everyday drinking, and it is priced and built to be exactly that.

The nose is fragrant and lightly malty, with butterscotch, shortbread and a grassy, herbal edge. The palate keeps things simple in the best way: malty toffee sweetness, a flash of blackcurrant and a squeeze of lemongrass citrus. The finish is short and clean, leaving shortbread, fresh herbs and a little ginger marmalade. Light and smooth, it needs no water, though a single ice cube on a warm evening does it no harm at all.

Think of it as a house pour: reliable, affordable and endlessly easy to reach for.

How to Serve

Neat in a tulip glass, or over a single cube if you like it cold. No water needed at this strength.
