Catena High Mountain Chardonnay 2024 75cl
Altitude is the whole story here. Catena source this Chardonnay from vineyards climbing well above 900 metres in the Andean foothills of Mendoza, where thin mountain air and cold nights keep the fruit taut and the acidity singing — the reason an Argentine Chardonnay can taste this fresh.
Nicolás Catena Zapata changed how the world thinks about high-altitude Argentine wine, planting ever higher in search of freshness rather than power. This bottling gathers fruit from several mountain sites and gives it a measured spell in French oak, aiming for texture without heaviness.
In the glass it is pale gold with a green tinge. The nose runs to citrus and pear, white flowers and peach, with a delicate note of vanilla from the barrel. The palate is where the altitude pays off: bright, cool-climate acidity underneath ripe orchard and tropical fruit, a creamy edge from time on the lees, and a clean, mineral-tinged finish. Suckling and Vinous have both rated recent vintages in the low 90s, which tells you how much wine is here for the money.
This is a serious weeknight white — versatile enough for a Tuesday, smart enough for guests. At around £15 it drinks like a bottle costing half as much again, which is exactly the kind of value House of Decant likes to shout about.
How to Serve
Serve at 10–13°C so the oak and texture show; too cold and you lose the aromatics. A medium-bowled white-wine glass suits it well. Drink within a few years.
Where to Drink It
The Wolseley for a glass with lunch. Scott's in Mayfair, where it flatters the seafood. Bibendum for something with a little more contemplation.
Food Pairings
Roast chicken with lemon and tarragon is a natural match. It also handles creamy pasta or grilled prawns with ease, the acidity cutting neatly through the richness.
