This is the Giacosa Barolo to reach for when you want the estate's classical hand without committing to a single-cru bottle. The 2021 draws Nebbiolo from within the Barolo commune and offers a genuine window into the Giacosa philosophy at a comparatively gentler price.
Bruno Giacosa built one of Piedmont's most revered estates on a simple principle: great sites, minimal intervention, long ageing in large oak. This straight Barolo bottling holds to that creed, giving a wine that speaks clearly of the Langhe hills without the extra weight and expense of the top crus.
In the glass it shows the classic Nebbiolo signature — dried rose and tar, red cherry and cranberry, dried orange peel, leather and a savoury earthiness. The tannins are firm and grippy in the traditional style, the acidity lively, the finish long and mineral. Pale garnet in colour, serious in intent.
At around £190 this is a fine introduction to Giacosa and to traditional Barolo. The 2021 is classical and needs a little time; it will drink well from around 2027 and hold comfortably for a decade or more.
How to Serve
Serve at 17–18°C in a large Burgundy bowl. Decant two hours ahead if drinking young — Nebbiolo tannins soften considerably with air.
Where to Drink It
Trullo, Islington — a wine list that loves Piedmont. Bocca di Lupo, Soho — regional Italian done properly. Sartoria, Mayfair — for a classic Barolo evening.
Food Pairings
Slow-braised beef shin with polenta is the honest Langhe answer. A mushroom risotto brings out the wine's earthy, autumnal side.
