Sparkling Red Wine: Bubbles With Depth

Fizzy, fruity and gloriously unserious, sparkling red is the most fun you can have with bubbles. Here is why it deserves a place at your table.

Bubbles are not just for white and pink. Sparkling red is one of wine's great overlooked joys, savoury, fruity, refreshing, and impossible to take too seriously.

The idea throws some people, but it should not. A chilled fizzy red is one of the most food-friendly, mood-lifting things you can pour, and the tradition runs deep, especially in Italy. It comes in three broad styles worth knowing.

The Three Styles

Lambrusco from Emilia is the classic: dry, savoury and lightly fizzy, brilliant with charcuterie and a total revelation for anyone who only knew the sweet old version. Sparkling Shiraz from Australia is the bold, dark, fruit-packed party bottle, famously poured at Christmas. And Brachetto d'Acqui is the gently sweet, low-alcohol charmer, all strawberries and roses, made for pudding.

Serve it cold, pour it with food, and watch the sceptics come round after one glass.

How to Serve

The golden rule is temperature: sparkling red wants a proper chill, cooler than you would serve a still red, which tightens the fruit and freshens the fizz. Pour it with pizza, charcuterie or a cheese board and it will out-perform far grander bottles for sheer enjoyment.

Sparkling red is proof that wine does not have to be solemn to be good. Chill a bottle, pour it for a sceptic, and enjoy watching the penny drop.
