Porseleinberg, Swartland 2021 - 75cl
The name means Porcelain Mountain, and the vines here grow on almost nothing — a thin skin of soil over blue schist bedrock in the Swartland. Callie Louw farms the site organically and makes a single wine from it under the Boekenhoutskloof umbrella. In little more than a decade Porseleinberg has become the benchmark for South African Syrah, the bottle people reach for to prove the Cape can do serious northern-Rhône-style reds.
This is Syrah with the volume turned down and the detail turned up. Whole-bunch fermentation and ageing in old foudres and concrete eggs mean no oaky gloss — what you get instead is white pepper, dark brooding fruit, cured meat and a distinctly stony, iron-like mineral streak that comes straight off that schist. The 2021 is fragrant and taut, with tannins that are firm but polished and a long, savoury finish that keeps going.
Open a bottle now with food and it sings, but this has the backbone to reward a decade in the cellar. If you can buy two, drink one and hide the other.
How to Serve
Serve at 16–18°C in a large Syrah or Bordeaux glass. Decanting for an hour is worth it on a young vintage — it softens the grip and lets the perfume out.
Where to Drink It
Brat, for the wood grill. Noble Rot Soho for a serious by-the-glass crowd. Boisdale of Belgravia if you want it with red meat and a bit of theatre.
Food Pairings
Lamb chops off a hot grill are hard to beat. It also loves a peppered venison steak or a dark, slow-braised short rib.
