Patron El Alto
El Alto is Patrón reaching for the top shelf, and the name says it plainly — the agave comes from the highest reaches of Los Altos, where iron-rich red clay grows a sweeter, fuller plant. This is the prestige expression, built at Hacienda del Patrón in Atotonilco under master distiller David Rodríguez.
What's in the bottle is a blend, and a considered one: four-year extra añejo at its core, rounded out with añejo and reposado, then aged across eleven different barrel types. The signature move is a hybrid cask — American oak body with a French oak head — which lends both the vanilla warmth of the former and the finer spice of the latter. The agave itself is still ground the old way, with a volcanic tahona stone, and baked in brick ovens.
The nose is soft and inviting — sweet agave, dried fruit, a curl of toasted wood. On the palate you'll find apricot, vanilla and almond over that unmistakable cooked-agave base. It finishes smooth and subtly sweet, with a peppery, smoked-vanilla note that keeps you coming back. At 40% and additive-free, it's polished without being tame.
This is the bottle for the occasion that deserves one — a milestone, a gift to someone who knows their agave, a nightcap you actually savour.
How to Serve
Neat in a copita or tulip glass at room temperature, so the eleven-cask complexity has somewhere to go. No ice — this is a sipping tequila that earns its keep undiluted. A drop of water will lift the fruit if you're curious.
Where to Drink It
Artesian at The Langham, for polish that matches the pour. The Savoy's American Bar, when you want the room to feel the occasion. Swift in Soho, for a spirit-savvy crowd downstairs.
Food Pairings
Beautiful after a meal with a slice of almond and orange cake. Or set it against a rich mole negro and let the dried-fruit notes find each other.
