Pomino is a tiny, cool pocket of Tuscany tucked up in the hills east of Florence, where the Frescobaldi family have grown white grapes for centuries. What sets it apart is altitude — vineyards climbing to 700 metres, where the air stays cool and the wines keep a freshness you rarely find further down in Chianti country. The result is a Tuscan white that drinks more like something from further north.
It's a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco, and that combination gives you the best of both: Chardonnay for weight and orchard-fruit generosity, Pinot Bianco for cut and precision. The 2025 pours a bright, clear straw yellow.
On the nose you get citrus — lemon and citron — with green apple and pear, lifted by white flowers: chamomile, a little wisteria. The palate is where the altitude shows: fresh, savoury and distinctly mineral, with a clean line of acidity running right through and a saline snap on the finish. There's nothing showy about it, just balance and drinkability, and it's an easy wine to keep coming back to. A little time in bottle brings out more texture and depth.
How to Serve
Serve chilled at 9–11°C in a standard white wine glass. It's best drunk young and fresh — no decanting required, just pull it from the fridge and pour.
Where to Drink It
Bocca di Lupo in Soho, for regional Italian cooking. The Wolseley, for an easy, elegant lunch. Trullo in Highbury, always happy with a fresh Italian white.
Food Pairings
Lovely with grilled fish and a squeeze of lemon, a plate of prosciutto and melon, or a simple risotto. It also makes a crisp, savoury aperitif.
